Chido Obi-Martin left Arsenal in 2024 and has since seen Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri shine
Chido Obi-Martin might just be looking back on the decision to leave Arsenal as a mistake.
It was confirmed last year that Obi-Martin was ditching Arsenal after two years to pen a move to Premier League rivals United.
The youngster scored for fun in the Arsenal academy, including an astonishing 10-goal haul in a single game for the under-16s in November 2023.
He arrived in Manchester amid plenty of excitement and even expectation, but just under six months down the line, he’s yet to be seen in the senior set-up.
That’s despite the ongoing troubles United have had, particularly in attack, since Ruben Amorim took over from Erik ten Hag at the backend of 2024.
Instead, all of Obi-Martin’s appearances in a United shirt so far have been reserved for youth team matches - he simply hasn’t been given a look in.
His lack of first-team experience at United is made all the more peculiar by the reported wages the teenager is pocketing, with The Athletic claiming he’s banking “tens of thousands of pounds” per week.
The exact figure isn’t known, but some reports have suggested it could be as high as £30,000.

Obi-Martin - and United fans - will be hoping the hesitancy around throwing him into the senior side is to protect his development and not expose him to the rigmarole of men’s football too early.
But had the 17-year-old stuck around at Arsenal, there’s every chance he’d have been mixing it with the big boys, especially on the back of the Gunners’ latest injury scare.
It was reported that Kai Havertz went down with a knock while Arsenal were away in Dubai enjoying some warm-weather training and is expected to miss the remainder of the season with a serious hamstring tear.
Arsenal have already been without Bukayo Saka since December and Gabriel Jesus since early January, with the Brazilian having since been ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Obi-Martin’s tender age likely wouldn’t have been a problem for Mikel Arteta either, given the Arsenal boss has shown on several occasions this season that he’s happy to throw teenagers in at the deep end.
Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri - the latter being the same age as Obi-Martin - have excelled for the north Londoners in the Premier League and Champions League this term, establishing themselves as key members of Arsenal’s injury-savaged squad.
Perhaps there’s a sense of resentment on Obi-Martin’s side, as he’s forced to watch his former academy chums light it up on the biggest stages while he’s still stuck in the United youth team set-up. Report this page
